Reading is one of the best ways to escape the stresses and horrors of the everyday world. When you are someone who is not just fighting to survive in the modern economy but also against the clutches of the patriarchy, there is no place better than in the pages of a book. In particular, the rules of any fantasy universe can stretch and overrun the outdated principles of our own. If you would like a break from the anti-feminist rhetoric on social media and in our everyday encounters, consider these five feminist fantasy novels for your next read.
The Priory of the Orange Tree
While this novel is lengthy, it's rise to fame is noteworthy. It has been heralded as a 'feminist Lord of the Rings' and lives up to its accolades too. The storyline features an array of women wielding positions of power with ferocity and strength. Together, they become an unstoppable group against the forces that seek to destroy their world.
Faebound
While this novel was not a favourite of mine, it's creation of a fantasy universe where power was held by those who were best for the role, and not those who just happened to be born a man was a great reprieve. 'Faebound' has many dark moments, however, there remains a light in the knowledge that the existence of the patriarchy is not one of them.
Emily Wilde Series
The 'Emily Wilde' series has garnered much attention in recent months and for good reason. The fantasy world in which Emily lives in is one that many women hope to achieve. A world where academic rigour and attainment is possible even in male centred fields. Despite the prejudice Emily faces in her time studying as a dryadologist, she trumps them all through her dedication to her studies. This is a fantasy romance suited for anyone academically inclined.
How to Lose a Goblin in 10 Days
This cozy romantasy is an easy read for anyone looking for a gentle and calming story to get lost in. The blossoming enemies to lovers trope is one of my personal favourites and coupled together with the character's fighting against stereotypes, the plot is irresistibly engrossing. We love to see women who learn their own prejudices and work to right systemic flaws.
Plain Bad Heroines
Although this is not strictly a fantasy title, it's dedication to the power and triumphs of three queer women battling the undergrowth of Hollywood amidst an increasingly dangerous curse makes it a worthy addition. During their time together, these women discover that together they are more powerful than any man in any position of power.
Feminist Fantasy
These five books may give you a starting point to discover stories where women either already live in a world that is not designed to keep us at the bottom, or stories where their battles for recognition, acceptance and equality is altogether victorious.
